Choosing Domain Names
Choosing
A Good Domain Name
You do not have to register your domain name using the same name
as your company. You can choose what ever you like but keep in
mind your customers. Some key considerations are-
• Is it memorable? For example if you run a business called
Andy Jones Printers Limited you might want to choose a domain
like www.cheapprinter.co.uk rather than something based around
the business name.
• Keep it short – easy to remember and easy to say
over the telephone
• Keep it simple and avoid too many hyphens if possible
Suffix For Your Domain Name
You will no doubt have seen domain names ending with .co.uk or
.com plus many other endings. Both are popular in the UK and can
be registered by anyone and it is largely down to personal preference.
A .com domain name is supposed to imply that the website is international
where as a .co.uk domain name is for a UK based website and audience.
The reality is that it makes very little difference although .co.uk
domains are slightly cheaper to register. However, many commercial
website's register both the .co.uk and .com endings to prevent
any competitor from registering an alternative suffix to attract
your customers. You will then use one domain name to build your
site on; the other domain can then very easily be pointed to your
main domain name.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain the domain name
you want as more and more businesses take to the web to advertise.
In particular short domain names are hard to come by. You may
therefore wish to consider a suffix such a .biz or .net which
are growing in popularity.
